Many people have difficulties cleaning their rugs. However, they are a beautiful addition to the house environment and should be treated in the best possible way to remain looking as good as new for a long time. As most of them are expensive, it is of big importance to know how to properly deal with them. Here are some tips concerning the problem.
What you should keep in mind is that rugs should be cleaned on both sides once a month. In that way the dirt that has been accumulated by the carpet is pushed towards the top of it and could be cleaned more easily. Different vacuum attachments can be used on the back of the rug, but if it is a wool rug, use only suction for the front of it. For the back you may also use the beater bar and the rotating brush. Be careful with fringes as you may ruin them. Do not vacuum them, just use your hands to remove whatever dirt is there. Be careful while cleaning stains. Make sure you clean them as soon as they occur. Never rub in circles, as it will help the stain get deep into the fabric of the rug and become permanent. Instead, grab a clean cotton towel and blot the spot, pressing hard from the outside towards the middle. Repeat until the towel has absorbed as much moisture as possible. Use a mild detergent and water to rinse the area if you have spilled milk. You should know that you should be very careful with using carpet sprays or shampoos and all sorts of cleaners. Some of them are not suitable for wool rugs and can deeply damage one. Every time you are using one, make sure to wash it all away with clean water, because if any soap residue remains in the carpet, it will start attracting dust and dirt more easily. Do not forget to always test your rug first, using a moist white cotton rag or towel, as there is always a possibility for the colors to be damaged. Do not forget to quickly dry the carpet after you have blotted out a stain, you could use a fan for doing that. Make sure to take your carpets to professional cleaners from time to time, and immediately do so if there has been a flood. You should know that carpets should be rolled, not folded, when they are being transported, and nothing heavy should be put on top of them.
Take care of your carpets as much as you can. You surely want them to always look how they used to when you bought them. Of course, at one point that is impossible, but you can do a lot to help slowing down the process of aging.
